In West Yorkshire, a geocacher was arrested, after a nearby business reported his activity as suspicious. The police also visited the cache owner, and he was not arrested, but he was told to remove all caches in the area. The geocacher that was arrested did not have to go to court, but this will "effect his future career" - whatever that means?

I realized when I logged in here this morning that I never finished posting about our week at geowoodstock, nor the pics.. and I haven't posted about finding our first Munzee. I don't think I've even posted the pics from this years ASP geobash...

It's been a very busy summer! Not a lot of geocaching the past year, for us. We find a few here and there.. but mainly when we go to events these days. It's actually harder with the kids older, and going in dozens of directions (all of which we have already cached pretty thoroughly) every day, to make time for geocaching. Maybe this fall will be better.

I know a lot of others are saying Munzees will never catch on because they do not take you to the awesome places geocaching does.. but for me, the smartphone addict, I LOVE the idea of them, and think I would prefer them to geocaching these days, if I could add pics and comments about the locations. I think they can take us to awesome places, just like geocaches do - and the simplicity of scanning them to log them.. I love that it eliminates the cheating, the log replacing, the logging.. I really love the idea. It does need some work in the application, it's still new.

Next up for us is the geobash in Bloom later this month. We love that event - Joe always has some great hides, and Datruck is hoping for some more night caches, those are his favorites.

Tuesday- Geowoodstock Week

This morning we drove straight to the Warren fairgrounds after breakfast, to volunteer with setup for geowoodstock. Our shift was 9:30-1:30. It was about 10 before anyone else arrived, and close to 11 before we really got started. We swept buildings and set up chairs in two buildings, and put out chairs at the vendor tables. Meg and I covered the vendor tables and hung a sign, Matt & Dan put lime lines on the field as parking guides.

We didnt do much, but hopefully it helped.

On our way out we met a couple of cachers, and took a pic of jennie- a vw van travel bug (insert pic when i have time) painted lime green with flowers. They suggested the slopburgers at Richards Restaurant, said it was the best coleslaw. They were so right! Better than primanti brothers! And they use local raised good quality beef. We were impressed. It is really a nice family place too.

Grabbed a few caches from there, including the local travel bug hotel (end of the road from Is It Snowing Yet) and the cache owner was out. His son has earned every single merit badge in boy scouts. Amazing! Our boys are all scouts, so datruck and him were chatting for awhile. :-)

Found 3 of the AGT-Warren caches. Planned to get all 6 today, but we really wanted to go kayaking... only found 11 caches today, we are not racking up big numbers on this trip, and logging gws as our 1,000 find is looking unlikely. But thats ok. :-)

Tomorrow we are headed to Erie. Should be a big number day... but we'll see. We also want to go to the zoo, preque isle state park, and chick filA, as well as fit in some kayaking. Theres an auto art virtual we are looking forward to seeing too.

Geowoodstock Week- Monday

Stopped in milesburg at sheetz, for gas. Found a nano.

On the way back to 80, stopped at a cemetery cache, with a nice uphill hike. :-)

Next stop was SB Elliot state park, for a DNCR Legacy of Conservation cache. Thats card #3 for us. :-)

A quick c&d along 153, then a stop for ice cream at a nearby diner. Took a minute to look at the app & found 5 caches nearby on a trail in the game lands. We decided to bike it. We do not have mountain bikes. We probably should have hiked. :-)

The first cache was Welcome (something or other, no 3g here, i'll try to remember to fix details later) and the cache description says its a micro, near the gate, 3ft high. Also says gps will be inacurate due to tree cover. Oh goody, a micro in the woods without good coords. My favorite. Not. We moved on, hoping they all wouldnt be like that.

Thankfully, they were not! One more micro, but an easy find. A keychain cache, a ronald mcdonald toy cache, and a really cool snoopy cache.

Made it out of the woods with only one biking accident, thankfully not too severe. I wouldnt recommend this for casual biking. Its a nice hike, or would be fun for mountain bikers.

It was hard to drive through ridgeway and not do the AGT puzzle cache there, but we had to get moving- as it was, we had to set up tents in the dark. :-(

Tomorrow we volunteer at geowoodstock, with set up. We'll hopefully knock out some caches too, we still need about 190 to make geowoodstock our 1,000th find. :-)

Possible Route to earn AGT - Venango

A possible plan for earning the Venango County Coin, around all the events on Friday before Geowoodstock.

Plan - get up early (leave around 6:45), stop by Come Meet The Mamas event at 7:30am. Try to leave by 8/8:30

Head to AGT-Venango - You’ve got mail is a C&D in pleasantville. A little out of our way, shoudn’t be much though. then back through titusville to AGT Venango Oil & Graves

It’s an hour drive, approximately, from the event to Two Mile Park. Try to arrive there by 10.
Go to 2 Mile Park do AGT Venango - two mile history, then kayak to AGT - Venango -Justus view. Not sure how long Justus View will take? you do NOT need kayaks to get to this cache, you can hike there. Planning on an hour minimum. Done by 11:30, over to Oil Creek Park for event at 11.

10 mile bike ride (5 miles one way) for AGT - Venango - Southern Half. Final stage is a short hike, not on the bike trail (I think the final stage may be on a short trail behind where the event is being held) If someone can pick you up at the end of the 5 mile trail, you can save the 5 mile trip back to your vehicle... Looking at the map, I think the bike trail ends pretty close to where the Geowoodstock Express event is being held - it should be simple to bike on over to the even.

Then over to do AGT - Venango - Wooden Gliders Trail - a flat, less then one mile, trail.

That’s all 6 stamps - we can turn in at the Oil Creek State Park Office and get our Venango coin, if we can finish it by 4pm.

that gives us two hours to get to the PowWow back at the Warren County Fairgrounds - it starts at 6, and is an hour from Oil Creek State Park.

We were out caching today, for the first time in awhile. Some of the caches were fun. Some.. not so much.

Why does everyone think it's a great idea to hide a bison tube in the woods these days? What happened to hiding containers you wanted people to find? I'm not opposed to bison tubes, and I prefer my caches to be in the woods rather than on a stop sign.. but a bison tube in the woods is a tricky thing. It needs a good hint, or extremely precise coordinates. Here IS a hint - it's hard to get extremely precise coordinates in a dense patch of woods. And looking at 50 different sticks to see which one the cache is hidden in, just really isn't that much fun. It's NOT the same as a creative container. It's been done. Over done. Move on to something more unique, or go back to the basics, please.

Geocaching At Hills Creek State Park

We were camping at Hills Creek with my parents this week-end, so it was a great time to introduce them to geocaching, AND to get our first legacy of conservation card.

There are only 2 caches in the state park -which surprised us. Both are an easy walk from the cabin area - and although both are ammo boxes in the woods, neither is much of a hike, these are great family friendly caches. Simple finds.

While there we walked over to the MST gamelands cache too - also an easy walk from the cabin area, round trip it was under 4 miles. That one is much harder to find, the coords are pretty off, and there was a lot of snow to help hide the location. :-)

I was surprised there are not caches on the trails at Hills Creek - at least on the lake trail? Both caches there are relatively close together.

The idea behind the trail is to put you on some of the best sites the Pennsylvania Wilds has to offer on state lands (State Parks, State Forests, and State Game Lands) and significant conservation locations. Each geocache on this trail will have a collectable “Legacy of Conservation” card, featuring one of Pennsylvania’s notableenvironmental heroes/heroines. Collect all 30 cards, and you will be eligible to receive the coveted “DCNR – Legacy of Conservation” coin at one of three validation locations – Parker Dam State Park, Lyman Run State Park, or Chapman State Park – be sure to bring your collected cards along. [Budget concerns have limited us to 500 – cards each and coins.]

Curious about which cache has the “Joseph T. Rothrock” card, the M. K. Goddard card, or the “Rachel Carson” card? It’s like the surprise in the cereal box – a different card in every cache, but you’ll have to find the cache first. More information about the hero and their potential connection to that cache site is included in each cache on the back of the “You found a geocache” information card. The cards are in a snap-lock container along with the log. Let me know when any of the cards are getting low – thanks.

Go to Leonard Harrison State Park in Tioga County to find out. But They Don’t – Who (or what) doesn’t do what? Find out in Clinton County. Dobby's Home – But it’s Fred’s trail. Cameron County. Don’t Just Talk the Talk – Tioga County. Most northeastern cache on the trail. First Purchase – Ah, the start of it all. Clinton County. Forest Primeval – BIG TREES. Clarion County. Labyrinth View – Potter County has a labyrinth. You can see it on the way to this cache. Management – Muggles. Lots of DCNR muggles. Be careful. Cameron County. Nature Had Other Plans – Sometimes nature has the upper hand over man’s wishes. Proof lies here in McKean County. Painter Cleft – Parking in Clinton County but hiking into Centre County. Now this is remote country. Rhymes with Brock – Jefferson County rocks! That rhymes with Brock, ay? Sleeping Acer – How about a first for Elk County. Okay, but what is an Acer? Stars Above – Of course there are. But here is where you can see them best. The Great Umbrella Cache II – One of the most amazing things I have seen in Pennsylvania. Found in Elk County. What Has Four Feet and Holds Lots of Water? – Held, held lots of water. It is gone now, but the feet are still here in Clearfield County. Have a Wherigo (see below) capable unit? – Learn more about S.B. Elliott State Park through the SBE Historic Tour cartridge.

This is officially a favorite for us! Not only is it a great, creative, hide, but the firemen here love watching the cachers and will lean out to say hi. :-)

I'm still debating how to share photos here. I love to share photos of the caches, but I don't want there to be TOO many obvious spoilers here either... a dilemma!

We're at 755 caches. We'd like to break 1,000 this year. With geowoodstock right nearby, that should be easily attainable? There are at least 20 in Bloomsburg we haven't completed yet, and I think another 20 or so in the Williamsport area.

Someone scheduled us to all go to the dentist at 8:30am on the first Monday of the new year.

That "someone's" wife just made a new years resolution to never allow him alone at an appointment counter again. LOL!

But since we were out, and in the area... we stopped for a couple more caches!

first stop was Moonstone. I really, really hate caches in locations like this. With that much traffic, I feel stupid being out there, and worry that a police officer will come along and ask what we are doing, etc... but it was a quick find thankfully, and we were in and out pretty fast.

From there we went to Blue - and PPL was there putting up a new pole. Two big trucks, right at what must have been ground zero - we were about 50ft away in the van. :-( Another time.

Opal was another quick find - in another location where I didn't like parking.. but there was almost no traffic there at all, so it wasn't nearly as bad as Moonstone.

Then on to Chrysolite, another cache and dash, but in a prettier area.. again very little traffic, so not too awkward to be there.

Last we headed to Silver. We looked for silver Saturday, and had no luck at all. Today we found it within minutes! Woohoo!

Dynomite Caches in the Game Lands

It's a gorgeous day today - 41 degrees, and sunny, in January! A perfect Sunday afternoon for a walk... so we headed over to the game lands (no hunting on Sundays in PA) to find the Dynomite caches listed there. We haven't been caching much in awhile, so there are a lot for us to find right here in our area. Nice. :-)

Both caches were easily accessible, no bushwacking, off nice wide paths... it's a really beautiful walk too.

It's a shame there is so much junk inside the bunkers over here. :-(

This is the first we've been in the woods caching in awhile.. our cell phone batteries drained FAST. We only walked 2.5 miles, were out about an hour, started out with batteries over 90% and drained them down to almost nothing on just two caches. Uh oh. We love cgeo, but that won't work if we want to do lots of caches in one day!

Mandrakas Caches

We hadn't been caching in ages! So this first day of 2011, 1/1/11. we set out to log some caches.

I think we set out with a goal of 10 caches. HA. Have you tried any of the Mandrakas Dragon series (Montoursvill/Williamsport Pa area) These are not cache and dashes, and our son had to be back to be to work at 3.

We "cheated" and did a quick c&d at Eders just to get 4 finds today.

It took us forever to remember how to use the software on our phones (still using cgeo, I looked at the "official" app today and it's not reviewing well at all, and it doesn't appear like they are working on it to improve it? LOVE cgeo) and to figure out how to organize our notes on these caches, etc. I ended up with a document in googledocs, which we can access from our phones or computers, with all the caches listed and the clues found in each cache, etc.

The first one we stopped at was too easy. We built false confidence. :-) The second we cheated by accident. While the boys were busy looking for stage one, Meg wandered off a bit and stumbled onto stage two. LOL! Then we went to the Gold Dragon, and immediately found stage one.

And there our luck ran out. We were too rusty for such a challenging cache! So I posted on facebook that we were stumped, and immediately got pm's through fb, and texts, offering a clue. We jumped on that offer, and with a clue, I found stage two in literally seconds. Got out of the van, walked over, and picked it up. Pure luck, it wasn't obvious, just happened to be the first one I touched. :-)

On to Dragon Silver.. where there was a lot more traffic than we expected! There are two containers there, the cache, and a decoy. We found neither! LOL!

So we ran to Eders for a quick cache and dash - we were waiting for "off season" for that one... then we headed home.

One of our goals this year is to finish this series of caches and find the Crystal Dragon.. but I have a feeling it will take us most of the year, and more than a few phone a friends, to complete it. We do have dentist appointments in that area on Monday, hoping to find at least one more...

Night Caching!

We LOVE night caching! The first one we ever did was the 7 GI's over in Boalsburg, but we've done a few more since then, most recently at the ASPGB. So we were really excited to hear that Joe was putting some night caches in the Bloom area. We went with the groups after the event to find them, and had a blast!

For a night cache, typically you go to the coords, shine a flashlight around until you find a glow in the dark marker, then keep following the glow in the dark markers. When you come to two dots (markers) stop. Look around for 3 markers - and the cache should be right around the three marks.

A NEPAG Summer at Worlds End State Park

We had a wonderful time this week-end at another event cache!

On our way to the event, we found caches in Picture Rocks, Sonestown, and near Laporte. Then we set up our tents before heading to Forksville for three more caches, and a stop at the General Store, which has been there since 1851 and was a favorite spot of mine long before we even knew about geocaching. :-)

We borrowed the wifi connection here to store caches in c:geo - there was literally NO cell reception anywhere around up here.

Before bed, we hiked to the Canyon Vista View cache. We found the cache and made it back to the overlook just as the sun was setting.

Back to our campsite, where Walnut-tripper met us at our site and invited us over for smores. Yum!

It was not a great camping night for us. We had borrowed the boys tents rather than bringing the big tent we usually camp in... and these tents leak! Thankfully we had NO cell reception, so rather than put our cell phones (also our gps units - we use droid phones to cache, using the c:geo app) so we shut our phones off, and locked them in the jeep overnight, to not waste the batteries. If we had had them in the tent pocket where we'd normally store them, they would have been completely ruined - we really got THAT wet! But it was ok. We got dry in the morning.

Uur 13 year old had never seen a phone booth before. She literally did not know what this was, when we pulled up to this spot to find a cache!

The next morning a group decided to tackle a couple of caches together, including the I Pine U Pine cache. We had our daughter with us, and I knew the terrain was supposed to be pretty rough... I didn't want to make her do that hike, after it rained all night. So Dan did this one without us. His pics of the views were amazing - I hope to get back and do the hike myself one of these days! The last stage was AWESOME. No wonder there are so many dnf's - it is NOT an easy one! But all the hints are right there in the cache description.. once you find the cache, you'll see how many hints there really are in that description!

Fear Factor Event

Come one, come all to the Second Annual "Fear Factor... Live!" Geocaching Event. This event is being held with Park Permission at John Rudy County Park in the Songbird Pavilion Area. 2 pavilions have been rented for this years event. There are 2 sets of playground equipment for kids of all ages, a beach volleyball court, 3 horseshoe pits and bathroom facilities are nearby. Electricity is provided and there are many grills on site for cooking. There are plenty of picnic tables but we recommend that you bring your own lawn chairs for additional seating. We had over 200 attendees last year and are expecting even more this year!

The Fear Factor Games!

This, however, is not your normal geocaching event. In addition to the normal meet and greet, this event will include the "Fear Factor Games". If you think that you will be expected to perform crazy stunts and eat things that would make a billy-goat puke... you're right! If you know the TV Show, you know what to expect! There will be a registration table for the brave souls who wish to participate in the games where they will be required to sign a release form in order to play. Prizes will be awarded to the Fear Factor Champion and the specific game winners.

Changing our Geocaching Username

Our geocaching name, as a group, has been Datruck's Crew, since we started out. But each of us has our own account - all 6 of us. Just for the most part, I'm the only one who logs them. As htruck, of Datruck's Crew.

This week-end while at the geocaching event, we realized that two caches we found have had the logs deleted - one at least twice now. I'm thinking this is because when they check the signitures in the log with the online logs, they see me logging as htruck, but we signed the log as Datruck's Crew (I do sign all my logs online with Datruck's Crew as well, but my username was htruck)

Solved by me and one of our 16 year olds, with help from google. :-)

The mathematical constant Pi (3.14159 . . .) is defined as the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter in flat Euclidean space. Pi is an irrational, transcendental number so its decimal expression never ends or repeats.

As unlikely as it may seem, the decimal representation of Pi contains the exact coordinates for this cache! The 7 digits for the north coordinate begin 13,204,942 places to the right of the decimal point and the 7 digits for the west coordinate begin 5,183,099 places to the right of the decimal point.

We have 7 more printed to work on this afternoon... and that's not even all that there are in this area!

Ok, problem number one (ours, not the caches!) we just not realize that this is a series, and that we were supposed to be keeping track of the words in red in the other caches! Oops! Guess we'll be doing some backtracking... The cache is Tuckers Scout Cache GC1W14N

We ran to grab this cache "quick" after playing disc golf at the Lime Bluff Recreation Area. Problem number two for us - new driver. One of our 16 year old twins drove his new to him jeep. He's a great driver, but this is a very narrow road, and he panicked a bit when, while his paid for completely by himself jeep sat in the middle of the road, and a truck came towards us. I think this might have been the cache owner, or someone who at least knows geocaching? But I do not know, because even though the truck stopped once we got in and moved so he could, we went on down the road to a spot where we could turn around (I'd actually recommend going a bit past this cache to that spot, and parking then walking back.) the truck had moved on.

To a spot by the creek, where my youngest said he was watching us? So I hope he knew what we were doing! Anyway around it, this was a definite stealth fail for us.

But alas, with all that fuss, the sun going down, and the episode of Leverage that the kids wanted to watch, on the dvr at home, we were too rushed and did not find the cache. Apparently this is a tricky find? We'll have to get back another day.

This was our second stop at this cache. First time there were people in the house next door watching us, and we were uncomfortable with the location, so we left.

This time, there was a grey PT cruiser, with a magnetic Weis sign on the side, and a yellow light on top, that drove over to the other side of the lot as if to watch us... really? Has Milton gotten so bad that Weis Markets now needs an outside security car? Or what exactly was that?

So still no find for us. I'm anxious to solve this one, but I think the best bet will be for us to park nearby and ride our bikes in, so we are less conspicuous...

The gps, strangely enough, bounced all over the place at Josph's Labratory! but it was still a relatively quick find.

Then we stopped by Kristy's Dastardly Devious Cache - which we had a hint on, so it was super quick for us. Creative! The kids got a kick out of it.

Then since we were headed towards New Columbia, we stopped in Montandon and got just down the road and Let's Go Down To The Docks Neither was difficult, but the second one is surrounded by poison ivy, and there was a lot of traffic on the road for the first one.. still, nice, quick, easy caches.

Bringing our total to 616.. I'm hoping to spend some time geocaching on Monday! I definitely want to hit 800 this year, but I think reaching the 1,000 mark may be possible for us...

C:Geo - The Best, but banned?

A couple of weeks ago a geocaching friend sent me a text telling me to try C:Geo. I went to the market, downloaded it, and fell in love. http://cgeo.carnero.cc/

Turn by turn navigation. FAST. Logs the caches from the app. No need to download queries. I don't think the compass is quite as accurate as geobeagle, but it's certainly good enough. We were in love!

Then we go to the ASPGB. And hear that C:geo is banned by groundspeak?? Rumors of people's accounts being frozen for using it, and that you can be banned for using it? I can't find anything from groundspeak saying you cannot use it, and it's available through the market, but if you search through the forums, apparently all mention of c:geo is removed. So how you are supposed to know you can't use it, if it can't even be mentioned, I am not sure.

Very, very irritating. I love C:geo. And the "official" geocaching app that was supposed to be out earlier this year is still in beta and not being released. There are LOTS of other geocaching apps out there now... but I really do not want to keep downloading new ones and playing with them, especially not knowing if they, like c:geo, are not "allowed". I don't want a new app, I want to use C:geo. Or an official groundspeak app. So please, groundspeak, if you cannot manage to release an official app for the droid, then just buy C:geo already!

On our way home from the bash, we stopped first in Cuba -

We found three quick caches here - Seneca Oil Earth Cache, a micro in the woods near the Earth Cache, and Cuba Lake Dam It All, where I tried to convince Dan to buy me one of the houses for sale on the lake as a summer home. :-)

The cache near here was a little difficult because of construction debris in front of it, but overall, these were all simple caches.

Frog in the Seneca Oil Spring Earth Cache

This is the site of the first discovery of crude oil in North America.

We drove to Painted Post NY, hoping to catch some caches there, and have supper at a drive in... but the drive in was closed (it was getting late, and a Sunday!) and we did not have much luck caching! We did get to quick parking lot caches, but the Always Cache stumped us - it was at a busy red light intersection, we could not figure out how we'd get to it without being really conspicuous!

We took that as a sign that we should head on home. :-) We crammed a LOT into 36 hours as it was!

I think we might actually be closer to completing a cache in every county in NY then we are in PA. LOL! I'll have to check that and see where we are on both states, before planning our summer trips. :-)

Our Trip to the ASPGB

This was our first year attending the ASPGB. It was a last minute decision for us, Datruck had just gotten his job back after being downsized earlier this year, and Joe&Jeni posted on Fb that they were getting ready for this event... Datruck couldn't get off work on such short notice, and worked 3rd shift Friday night, but we drove up as soon as he got home Saturday morning.

I was especially bummed to miss the group photo, and the wherigo cache lesson. I really hope they do the wherigo as a group again next year!

We arrived about 1:30 in the afternoon, and immediately unloaded the bikes from the bike rack to do the caches on the bike trail. We knew were close enough to 600 caches that if we logged quite a few before going to the event location (since we had already missed the photo) we could log this as our 600th find.

We immediately met so many cachers! As a matter of fact, I started out this week-end with a goal of racking up some major numbers... but we just had so much fun chatting with all the other cachers, it didn't happen that way. We ended the week-end with just 50 caches! But that is also in part to a vehicular problem on Sunday... good thing we had the bikes along!

The weather forecast called for rain, but other than a few sprinkles, we didn't see any. The weather was really nice! After biking the bike trail and doing the caches along the way, we headed into Bradford Pa to check into our hotel. First we stopped by the Bridal Falls cache - I love waterfalls.

This was the only time all week-end that our droids failed us. No signal. No 3g. No wifi. But before we could head back to the van for the garmin, we ran into another pair of cachers, and followed their gps to the cache. Spotted it just as we spotted The Carels coming down the path, so we waited for them to spot it before removing it and all of us signing the log. The Carels are some of our favorite cachers - they are from our area and have almost 11,000 finds!

I think I mentioned that this was a very last minute trip? I tried to book a cabin, but they would not allow me to only rent for one night online. No one answered the phone number on the website, I think they may have had I called the next day during office hours, but in the mean time I found a really cheap hotel on Expedia.com. Several places were booked, but the Desoto had rooms. I should have guessed there was a reason they still had rooms... I wanted to love the place. Charming. 50's. Not as in "retro" 50's, but as in, the fixtures, flooring, yellow tub and toilet - all were from the 50's. There was a Budweiser sticker stuck on the picture on the wall in the room. The whole lure of a hotel room was the electrical outlets to charge our droids - but we were not thinking and shut off the light switch on our way to the restaurant for supper. Leaving my phone plugged into an outlet with no power. LOL! It wasn't horrible, but I would not choose to return. Next year we plan to stay all three days, and in a cabin!

On our way to the motel, StevensonsASearchin called my cell - she saw we had found Jareds micro and got my cell phone number off facebook (she's a local geocacher we know from home) for a hint. :-)

Supper was awesome. We always try to avoid normal chains when traveling (and at home for that matter) so we were looking for some place unique. Stopped in at Texas Hot first, but Fratelli's was right next door and the special in the window was a chipotle chicken sandwich that really sounded good to me. I was so glad we decided to go here - COOL place! more 50's, but this place was really clean. And fun! And the food was awesome.

Then we headed back to the park for a few more caches, and some night caching! On our way in we saw TwoLuvies looking for Jareds Micro in a tree to the right of where it is located. I had the window down, and pointed back to the right tree to give them a hint, and she exclaimed "WHERE???" This one had stumped them last year, so we parked and hopped out to show them where the cache was located. I think a lot of people were stumped on this one, I'm disappointed to read the logs and see there was a lot of damage in the area from cachers looking for it. :-( We chatted with them a long time - what a cool couple! She shared that whenever they are traveling, they plan a geocaching event in the area they are traveling to. So when they get there, they meet a whole bunch of geocachers from that area! how cool!

We only did three of the night caches. Lucky Scramble was super muddy on the way up, but that was a short distance and we made it easily. We didn't realize it was a night cache when we started out, most of the night caches are listed as puzzle caches, but this one was not. Nightime on Holt Road was next, and hard to miss! LOL! What a huge container! Then on to Midnight Romp With Roscoe, where the cachers headed out warned us that the markers were further off the path than with other caches - a tip that enabled us to find the cache with ease. :-)

Near Lucky Scramble we chatted awhile with two other caching groups, and learned of a cache in an indian cave near Indiana Pa, that is definitely on our "must get to " list. :-)

Sunday morning we had originally planned to attend the breakfast, but we had not gotten tickets, and there was a Tim Hortons beside our motel. We have friends in Canada that have introduced us to Timmies, and since there are none anywhere near our home area, we broke our ban on chains and had breakfast there. Next year I'd like to do the breakfast, simply because I think we missed out on meeting up with so many cachers by missing the meals.

Earth Cache Dam - one of three Earth Caches we found this week-end

We started out with the intention of hitting the 100 cache loop... but about 6 caches in, the van was overheating majorly. We suspected the thermostat had blown, but later found it was the fan module. either way, it meant a change of plans. We had talked about biking the trail with the dalmations caches, and we had our bikes, so it seemed like the best plan for the day. First we signed in at the event, found a few more caches there, then we headed to 101 Dalmations #7 and started the trail.

There are 103 in the Dalmations series. Each cache has a puppy name in it, you record the name, and have to send the owner all the names with the correct number, to get the coords to the last cache. We found quite a few, but not even 1/4 of the total! There are SO many caches in this area, I'd like to take a day trip and go back and cache a lot more, sometime soon. It's about 3 hours away for us though, and I dislike driving, or being confined in a vehicle... #15 and #43 were the only two that stumped us, we'll get some hints before going back for them again.

Several times the trail, which was all mud, crosses a road and you could pop into town, or at least an area with a few other caches. This was one of those points - we loved this old general store with old fashioned candy, pickles in a barrel, and Brittany - the real life dog named in one of the nearby 101 dalmations caches. :-)

Across from the general store, was the Brain Freeze cache. And a great spot to stop for an ice cream break, after all that caching!

After all that biking, we decided to head back to the park for a few more caches, before heading home. The van was doing fine as long as it didn't have to sit without moving, and as long as we weren't doing a lot of stopping and starting.

I was fascinated by this nest every time we drove in and out of the park - see the head in there?

At least I THINK this is the cache we were at... I admit they are blurring together a bit for me. I can't believe no one else has mentioned this rock formation in the logs? Which makes me wonder if I am confused by which cache this was at. This is part of a series - record the names in the cache, send them all in, receive a wooden coin. We forgot to record the name. It was a pretty hike, we'll do it again when back in the area.

Before heading to the ASPGB in NY for the week-end, we made a quick run over to Danville to check out our bikes and our droids accuracy under tree cover. Both did great! We plan to bike quite a bit while in NY.

We found -

Rock On - a cache and dash near a small parking area. There were a few big trucks parked there, and I suspect drivers were sleeping in them, but I don't think anyone paid any attention to us.
Montour Co. Travel Bug Hotel - We biked to this one, but it was a REALLY short bike ride, we easily could have walked. :-) Pretty trail, we've been on this before for other caches.
The Oldest Rail To Trail - one of the best we've done in awhile. :-) Beautiful location, be warned that it gets dark here fast because of all the tree cover. Tricky hide! We felt super victorious when we finally located it.
Who Ya Gonna Call? Not Vinz Clortho! - LOVED this container! The cache owner replied to tell us it's a real estate agents lock, you can get them at hardware stores. Datruck loved it enough that you can expect to find one hidden by him, in our area, before long. :-)

While we were out we stopped in at a little "hole in the wall" Italian place that was a complete surprise when we walked in the door. Beautiful place, you could dress up nice and go there.. or show up as a family. Fantastic food, huge portions. It's squeezed in between CVS and the chinese buffet, with Ritas on the end.

Allegheny GeoTrail Rules

All geocaches are officially registered with www.geocaching.com. Participants will need to be registered on geocaching.com to retrieve the coordinates and other location information. Registration on geocaching.com is free.

Before setting out to find the caches, you will need an official passport booklet. Passports are free and can be obtained at any of the listed Allegheny GeoTrail headquarters. There will be at least one headquarters location in each county. Each cache will contain a unique stamp, to be used in your passport as proof of finding the cache. Please use the stamp only for your passport, and return it to the cache container when finished. The next person who finds the cache is going to need it! Only one passport may be given per cacher.

Once a cacher successfully finds six caches in a county, they are eligible to receive their free geocoin. Presentation of the passport with a minimum of six stamps from one county must be presented at the headquarters for that county, where the geocoin will be awarded and the passport will be validated. The passport will then be returned to the geocacher, to be used with subsequent cache finds in other counties, or to continue to document finds in the same county. The passport is the property of the cacher, to retain as a keepsake. Only one coin per county will be given to each cacher. Cachers who get six stamps from all ten counties in their passport are eligible for the special ten-county Allegheny GeoTrail coin, which is also available at any of the designated Allegheny GeoTrail headquarters.

I would LOVE to go to this... but it's also opening day for midget league baseball. And our son plays midget league baseball. :-( I'm still hoping... if the game is quick, it's straight highway, and hour away... we'd "need" to be there by 1:00 for the group photo... we'd be cutting it close, but it might be possible. Come celebrate the 10th anniversary of geocaching with NEPAG at Hickory Run State Park! Join us from 11:00 am. until 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 1st, for food, fun, and fellowship at the Hickory Run picnic pavilion.

All geocachers are welcome to attend, whether they are members of NEPAG or not. We have reserved a picnic pavilion at the site, so the event will take place rain or shine.

Post a log if you plan to attend so we know how many people to expect, and please indicate in your log what you will contribute to our potluck lunch. If bringing hotdogs or hamburgers, please bring the buns to go with them. If bringing a side dish or dessert, please state what it will be so we can avoid duplicates. NEPAG will provide cups, plates, napkins, utensils, and condiments.

Some of the planned activities include:

*There will be a raffle of geocaching related items donated by NEPAG members. All attendees are encouraged to donate something for the raffle. Items should be dropped off as you sign the logbook.

*Sign up to join NEPAG. Information for registering your membership online will be available!

*Lunch will be potluck. Please indicate in your "will attend" log what you will contribute.

*NEPAG will provide the special anniversary cake!

The World Wide Flash Mob event is coordinated with many, many other events around the world. Attendees gather for 15 minutes, 1:00 -1:15pm edt, and then disperse.

General parking will be available in the Stadium West, Jordan East and Orange E (near Shields Building) lots. There is no fee for parking. Most of the folks will be there to attend graduation.

Wear your grade school, high school, college, or favorite colors. Gate A of Beaver Stadium is where the students wait to get into Penn State football games. Some camp out overnight for better seats. We, however, will only be here a very short time.

Wander about and act like a muggle. Don't look like a gathering waiting to happen. This is part of the fun. We will seem to appear out of nowhere. There are several visitor places nearby - a Joe Paterno statue, a few walkable caches, All-Sports Museum, etc.

If you look at the iphone app on the geocaching.com site, at the very bottom of the page, it says

"We will be introducing a version of the application for Android in Q1 of 2010." YAY!

Until then, we use geobeagle combined with Radar. We've been out twice this week, with two droids and a garmin, and the droids were just as accurate as the garmin every time. The readings were almost exactly the same, although on the droids we are learning our metric.

Install both. Then open geobeagle and start caching!

You can pre-load caches, which is nice and a little faster, but it's never necessary, you can cache anywhere you are with no pre-planning. Under settings, choose map to see the caches around you. There's a link to go right to the webpage to read the details if you do not have the caches preloaded

If Caches Are NOT Pre-Loaded -

choose geocaching.com
Android will go to a list of caches near you, choose one
On the cache page, scroll down to "for online maps" (it will be right above where the logs begin)
Choose google maps (this is the trickiest part, tapping the right link with them so close together! LOL!)
Android will ask you what to open it with, choose geobeagle from the list

It will then go to a screen like the black one below. From there you can view the map, use the arrow to navigate once you are close, and the webpage link will take you to the page to log the cache. (the "log cache" button will enable you to log using SMS, but we have never done that... I just go to the website and log from there)

To Load Caches Ahead Of Time -

generate a pocket query as normal (you must be a premium member at geocaching.com to do this)
download the file on your computer. (emailing it to your phone does not work well for some reason)
hook your droid up to your computer. (remember to then pull down the top shade like you are checking your new messages, and choose "mount"
Place the zip file on your phone.
unmount, disconnect
Open geobeagle, choose the settings button (always the second button over that is a bunch of lines like a paragraph, to the left of the house) and choose cache list
Then press settings again and choose "sync/sdcard/download"
Now you will have a list of all the caches in your pocket query, and from the black screen above, you can choose details and read about the cache without going to the website. No need to go to the site and open googlemaps either - it will load right from the list.

We don't print the pages for each geocache before we go, we use our Palms.. another cacher asked me to send her the info on what we use, so while I had it all typed up, I thought I'd share, in case anyone else is interested in what works for us.

First = You need to be a premium member of geocaching.com It's worth the fee - there are members only caches too!

Second - GSAK. http://www.gsak.net/
You can use the trial version for 30 days to be sure you like all this before shelling out more money. :-)

Third - Cachemate - for the palm to read the files. There are other programs, but I like this one a lot. http://www.smittyware.com/palm/cachemate/ This one only costs $8

I use a Magellan explorist 500, and a tungsten E palm - Dan uses a Palm Zire with the same software.

D) Apply nail polish remover, then ice.

The correct answer is B. Dr. Oz says ticks are one of the leading carriers of diseases in the United States, causing tens of thousands of people to contract Lyme disease each year. The safest way to remove a tick from your body without exposing yourself to diseases, Dr. Oz says, is simply to pull it out.

"It's actually the most common reason that we get bad problems resulting from insect bites," he says. "The tick has in itself viruses and other contaminants that are quite detrimental to our well-being. So if you try to burn it … or put gasoline on it, it actually irritates the tick. So what does the tick do? It regurgitates the fluid back into you."

To avoid the tick releasing its germs into your body, Dr. Oz says to remove it without bothering it. "Get your tweezers, flip the tick upside down, grab the mouth of it and pull hard," he says. "Don't twist it. Just pull it, because the barbs go straight in." If the tick's head remains in your skin after you remove its body, Dr. Oz says not to worry—the saliva and viruses are contained in the tick's body.

"If you want to get [the head] out like a splinter, then get it out," he says. "But I'll give advice for moms out there—if your kid has a little bit of the head left in, the body will push it out by itself. I wouldn't strap the kid down and go after the head of it. That's not where the infection is. The infection was the body that's already gone."

We're at 148. I think we decided our goal for the year is 300... so we have a lot of caching to do! These were some gorgeous caches, all fairly close to home, that we just hadn't taken the time to hunt down before now.

What amazing views up here! We saw a wild turkey cross the road ahead of us. The coolest part of this cache was the log book.. made out of camo duct tape. :-) But the views were pretty amazing too.

What it is - in a nutshell - is a challenge to find one cache in every grid of the Delorme Map of Pa. Once accomplished, you are given the coordinates to the Pa Delorme Mystery Cache.

This was our first poker run, although we had heard of them before. It was so much fun! I love geoevents. This event was so well organized, I was amazed. Everyone was handed a paper with 10 caches, specifying which one they were to start with (so we all did not end up starting at the same cache) and we had to pull one, and only one, card from each of 5, and only 5, caches. Best poker hand won, worst came in second. We managed a pair of two's, neither the best or the worst.. but won two door prize drawings. A coffee mug from woolrich (and I had grumbled the whole way to this event because Dh's coffee mug doesn't fit in the cup holder and kept spilling!) and a stuffed Buffalo with a Woolrich scarf. :-)

We had a great time caching in this area - and an even better time chatting with fellow geocachers!

Another FTF!

FINALLY got back out caching this week. It's so busy on the farm this time of year, it's hard to find time to get out there.. and there are LOTS of new caches popping up lately!

One of our oldest boys (they are twins) is home schooled now (they all will be next year) so when Among The Mothers was posted, we ran right over. And looked, and looked, and looked. We were too out of practice, and too short on time.. and perhaps we are just blind. It IS hidden really well.. but we felt pretty stupid when after picking up the two youngest children from school and going back, the youngest of our crew walked right up and had it in his hand before I was completely out of the van even. :-) FTF prize was lottery tickets, we won $2. :-)

Launched one of the kids Tb's finally from there too - DeetDeet. And we picked up, from that same cache, one of the coolest coins I have seen yet. Not surprisingly, it's a CCcooper coin - Just Another Geocoin. Also picked up the Ask the Chief TB.

From there, since we were finally out with the GPS, we stopped by Holy Spirit Cache. Great camo!

Our two oldest boys are headed to scout camp out tonight and will probably do some geocaching. We're hoping to get out as a family next Sunday, and we're looking forward to the event in Galeton in two weeks.

Feeling lucky? Need to get a cache in grid 34 for the DeLorme Challenge? Then this is the event for you! Come and join us for a little poker fun and a great meal!
This event is a poker run located around the Galeton (PA) area. Teams will need to visit any five caches of their choice, out of 10 caches that will contain individual playing cards, each in a sealed envelope. Maximum number of members per team is four individuals (your choice of members). We will meet at Krickets Restaurant (the posted coordinates at the top of the page) at 11:00am for instructions and also the list of coordinates for the ten local caches with playing cards will be distributed. Teams will then split up to retrieve 5 (and ONLY 5) envelopes, each with a playing card, from any of the ten caches (only one card per cache can be taken). At 1:30pm everyone is to return to Krickets for a late lunch, and then to open each team's five envelopes to see who the winners are. We will be awarding the grand prize to the highest hand, and a second prize to the team with the lowest hand. We are also using this event to introduce newbies to caching. As an incentive, any team bringing a first time cacher (and they cannot live under the same roof as any of the team members) will receive a wild card to be used with their poker hand! Please try and bring a newbie with you to this event!We will also be having a second poker game for all cachers over the age of 16. Each individual in attendance will be give 5 random cards. We will be giving away approximately 18 door prizes and they will be awarded to the highest individual poker hands.We are very fortunate to have been given some VERY NICE door prizes for this event. We realize that many cachers will have to travel a bit of a distance for this event, but the prizes alone should make it worth their trip! You won't want to miss this event!Please log your intentions of attending as soon as possible so that we can plan accordingly. Thanks!
